Grand Canyon High School Track Team is Going Places

May 10, 2017

Elna Perkins, Grand Canyon High School’s Track Coach, as a lot to be proud of. Despite the school’s size, four of its students have been invited to the “Down Under” track meet in Australia. Those students are scrambling to raise funds to attend. The cost is $5000 per child.

At a recent Town Council meeting Perkins introduced 12th grader Candy Lopez, 11th grader Melisha Jeter-Nanacasia, 11th grader Neegoh  Kaska, and 9th grader Cayli Miles.

She thanks the Town Council for its past support of the track team and was hoping the Council could sponsor the Australian trip. It’s not possible because the town cannot allocate funds for specific students, only team events. The Council did encourage the students to seek sponsors among the business community.

Town Manager Eric Duthie is also working with the school district to see if the Town can offer any assistance to the track team as a whole.
