School District News Release:Dr. Shonny Bria Named Grand Canyon Superintendent

Dr. Shonny Bria Named Grand Canyon Superintendent The Governing Board of the Grand Canyon Unified School District met in Special Session on Tuesday, April 29, 2014, to officially offer a contract to Dr. Shonny Bria to become the next Superintendent of the Grand Canyon Unified School District.

Dr. Bria will replace Dr. Nancy Alexander who will be leaving the school district at the end of the year. Shonny Bria comes to the Grand Canyon School District after serving long successful stints as superintendent in the Pendergast Elementary School District in Phoenix, Arizona, and Battle Ground Public Schools in Washington. She earned her Master’s Degree in Special Education and a Ph.D. in Administration and Supervision from Arizona State University. Dr. Bria is very excited at the prospect of serving the students, staff, parents, and community of the Grand Canyon Unified School District.

The school district received seventeen applications for the position which were screened down to five finalists. Those finalists participated in a rigorous two-day interview process on Monday, April 28, and Tuesday, April 29. The finalists were interviewed by the Governing Board, interviewed by a committee of staff and community members, provided a hosted tour of the Grand Canyon National Park and Tusayan community, spent time with the staff of the Grand Canyon District Office, and visited a classroom to interact with students as a part of a tour of the school. The finalists enjoyed a lunch hosted by Dr. Alexander attended by local community members.
