Tusayan Flood Planning Progressing. Will Need Extra Funding

June 12, 2026

The Town of Tusayan, in partnership with the Coconino County Flood Control District, is going to need some additional dollars to finish Phase two of the Tusayan Drainage Master Plan, which is in response, in part, to the massive flood that hit the community in 2023. (Pictured Below)

Phase 2: Engineering & Design Concept Reporting
Phase 3: Final 100% Construction Blueprints & Permitting

The design portion for phase one is already done.

The construction of retention basins, Coconino County Wash channel widening, and State Route 64 protection barriers are the major early construction projects.

Construction will be done in phases to minimize any disruptions. Mayor Clarinda Vail says the town will be able to work around any construction issues and closures.

The Town Council got an update on the project at its June 9th meeting.

Town Manager Greg Clifton said the State of Arizona has been very helpful in reimbursing Tusayan for much of the costs involving engineering but additional funds, about $450,000, will be needed to complete the engineering for Phase 2.

A delegation from Tusayan Town Hall is heading to Washington DC in June to make the case for federal funding for the engineering and the construction phase.
