Tusayan May Replace Planning Commission With Hearing Officer

April 20, 2026

Maintaining a quorum for a planning commission in Tusayan has been a challenge for years. That’s why Town Manager Greg Clifton is proposing replacing the Commission with a Hearing Officer. A draft ordinance on the idea will be considered at an upcoming meeting.
"
Clifton said the Officer would be someone local who would attend the meetings in person.
Clifton told the Town Council the town is lacking the functionality of a true Planning Commission, “This is not entirely uncommon in communities our size. A hearing officer brings a level of experience and expertise that is needed."

Clifton said a Hearing Officer would also bring a level of independence needed for the job.

The Town Council instructed Clifton to move forward on the idea. Clifton says there is a pending zoning application and it needs due consideration.
