This Month’s Update From Tusayan Mayor Clarinda Vail

February 26, 2021

For EVERYONE In Tusayan!

Here is a quick update on what I have been working on this past month. My main goal as the proud new Mayor of Tusayan is to create a government that works for “YOU not the few.” I want and welcome your questions and requests about the things I can do for you!

*This month, I have virtually met and/or talked with representatives from various local and state offices including the Tusayan Sanitary District, Kaibab National Forest Service, Grand Canyon National Park, Grand Canyon National Park Airport, Tusayan Sports Complex Work Group, Greater Arizona Mayors Association, Coconino County Board of Supervisors, Senator Kyrsten Sinema and Congressman Tom O'Halleran Office and numerous others to discuss town affairs, COVID relief assistance, and finding new ways to better serve our residents.

*As many of you are aware, COVID-19 cases have continued to climb in our community. It is so important for all of us to stay vigilant against the virus. If you are eligible, please register and get vaccinated for the safety of our community and keep demand up for the vaccine coming to our town and county. We are continuing to look to our community for input on supply needs for COVID relief and how vaccinations are going for you and your business. Please share your stories with me or any supply needs you may be lacking.

*Coconino County is currently vaccinating County residents in Phase 1A (healthcare workers and long-term care facility residents and staff) and Priority Groups within Phase 1B. Please DO NOT sign up now, if you are not qualified as a 1B or meet the age requirement.

*I am proud to announce that the Tusayan Town Council decided to end its contract with Brownstein, Faber, Hyatt Schreck earlier this month. For years, the Town has spent approximately $15,000 a month on Washington DC lobbyists and wasted countless dollars on consultants and lawyers. I am eager to move forward and find better uses of these tax dollars that would provide benefit and surplus to our residents, especially as our Town continues to recover from the pandemic.

*The Tusayan Town Council Retreat has been rescheduled for Saturday, February 27th at 10:00 am. Due to the COVID-19 concerns, we will not be hosting this retreat out-of-town, but have decided to move forward with an in-house/virtual retreat.

I am grateful for the hard work of the current Town council and look forward to creating ways to improve Tusayan’s quality of life with them. We are off to a good start!

Among the topics, I will be bringing up was a key to my campaign platform: returning excess town revenues in lump-sum payments to you (potentially $6,000 per person) and then annual payments of up to $3,000 per person. I am one of 5 votes on the Town Council so it will be important to see where my colleagues stand. I feel very strongly about this concept especially during this time when so many need more help. I will keep you posted on what happens.

*Thank you to all those who are liking my Facebook page. It is and will be a great source of updates moving forward. If you have not already visited my page, please visit www.facebook.com/TusayanMayor and check it out. And REMEMBER to encourage your friends and neighbors to follow and like my social media. Also, feel free to email or call anytime at Clarinda.Vail@tusayan-az.gov and 928-637-8912. I am here for you!

*I would encourage Tusayan residents to attend our town council meetings especially now that they are accessible online. I will work hard to make sure that they continue to be online and interactive after the current COVID crisis is over.

There is a lot of great work to be done. We will keep improving Tusayan together! Thank you.
