Grand Canyon National Park has expanded temporary closures in portions of the inner canyon after an Aug. 29 flash flood damaged trails, bridges, utilities and other infrastructure in Bright Angel Canyon and the Phantom Ranch area.

The closures are intended to protect visitors and provide safe access for park staff and partner agencies conducting damage assessments, repairs and stabilization work, park officials said.

Effective immediately, the following areas are closed to visitors:

South Kaibab Trail below the Tip-Off
Bright Angel Trail below the intersection with the Tonto Trail
Commercial and noncommercial river trips may continue exchanges at Pipe Creek Beach along the Bright Angel Trail.

The North Kaibab Trail, Cottonwood Campground, Phantom Ranch, Bright Angel Campground, Black Bridge and Silver Bridge were closed earlier after the flood.

The park has not set a reopening date. Officials said reopening decisions will depend on conditions in damaged areas and whether access can be restored safely as response and recovery work continues.
